After premiering at the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, "LUTAH A Passion for Architecture: A Life in Design" is returning to Santa Barbara with a 6 p.m. screening on Sunday, Jan. 5 at the Lobero Theatre, followed by an audience Q&A with Marc Appleton, Melinda Gándara and Dawn Ziemer.
"LUTAH" focuses on the life of architect Lutah Maria Riggs (1896-1984). As a protégé of George Washington Smith, Riggs designed some of Santa Barbara’s most iconic homes and buildings, such as the Lobero Theatre and Vedanta Temple.
Initially eclipsed by her male contemporaries in the early 20th century, Riggs navigated her way through the male-centric world of architecture and brought a freshness to the established architectural styles of Southern California.
Riggs blazed a trail for women, relying on the courage of her convictions and a hint of eccentricity. Through never-before-seen photographs and journal entries from Riggs’s personal collection, along with candid interviews, and rare footage of private homes, the documentary reveals a side of her that had previously gone unnoticed.
“'LUTAH' is a story of hardship and hard work. Our documentary is beautifully told through Lutah Maria Riggs’s architectural accomplishments, and those whose lives intersected with hers," said Melinda Gándara, former project archivist for the Architecture and Design Collections at UCSB.
"'LUTAH' sheds light on a true Santa Barbara treasure," Gándara said. "It is an inspirational story. It is a timeless story. It is an extraordinary story. It is one that has left an indelible mark in our community.”
Since its premier at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, "LUTAH" has been shown worldwide including at some 60 film festivals, such as the Palm Springs International Film Festival and Lund International Architecture Film Festival in Sweden. It also was screened in Ohio, Riggs' birthplace.
Ticket prices range from $14 for students to $106 for VIP tickets, which include premiere seating and a pre-film reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
