Pols Want Drones To Inspect Facades In Wake Of Architects Death - Midtown Manhattan, NY Patch

NEW YORK, NY — A group of New York City politicians are pushing legislation that would allow the city to maintain and fly a fleet of drones to inspect potentially dangerous building facades in the wake of the death of an architect who was killed by falling debris in Midtown Manhattan.

City Councilmembers Jusin Brannan, Roberty Cornegy and Ben Kallos introduced two new bills this week, supported by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, that would require a drone inspection within 48 hours of a 311 complaint about a building's facade. The second bill authorizes the drones to be used at New York City Housing Authority complexes.

The politicians say that the drone fleet would be a boon to public safety and reduce the amount of scaffolding required on the street.

"The City of New York should be a world leader when it comes to incorporating the latest technologies as a means of creating efficiencies in government as well as increased methods for public safety," Brannan said in a statement. "Drone technology is an effective new tool to the toolkit for quicker and cheaper initial facade inspections that should save both lives and money."

Drone flights are illegal under current city regulations. In addition to introducing the two new bills, Brannan and Borough President Adams put in a request with the Independent Budget Office to analyze the costs and potential savings of conducting building inspections with drones.

Erica Tishman, 60, was killed on Tuesday, Dec. 17, after being hit with a falling piece of debris on West 49th Street and Seventh Avenue. The city Department of Buildings had issued a violation to building owners 729 Acquisition LLC in April, but a scaffold was never installed and the facade was never repaired. The building owner did pay the city's $1,250 fine.

"Government in the 21st century can no longer be reactive; it must be proactive. The horrific and preventable death of Erica Tishman this week was a tragic reminder that we need forward-thinking solutions and real-time governance strategies that ensure the safety and wellbeing of all New Yorkers," Adams said in a statement.
