Inside the home of... Soho Farmhouse architect Alex Michaelis - harpersbazaar.com
INGE CLEMENTE
When it came to building his dream family home, architect Alex Michaelis prioritised playfulness. His West Kensington five-bedroom house features a fireman's pole, a slide and portholes, proving that beautiful design doesn't have to be serious.
Having worked on Soho Farmhouse, Battersea PowerStation and Duddell's through his architecture company Michealis Boyd, Michaelis' own residence - formerly a car garage - was inspired by the surrealist curves of Le Corbusier. The walls softly curve from room to room, creating a sense of space, calmness and light. Here, he talks us through his unconventional, family friendly abode.
The Round House is available to rent via OneFineStay.

1The kitchen
"The kitchen is designed with Colin Astridge (Bulthup Oxford) who did an incredible job with the enormous curved end island unit. We worked with Electrolux Grande Cuisine incorporating all their equipment so we had a fabulous kitchen and they now have a showcase kitchen to show possible clients."
2The dining area and kitchen
"We wanted to create a big family room onto a courtyard with lots of light from roof lights. We have a 9-metre long banquette and two Heerenhuis oak tables which work for everything."
3The fireman's pole
"The children use the fireman’s pole to come down from their bedrooms."
4The sitting room
"This big family sofa by Moroso is used to sit in front of the fire and watch movies. Behind are paintings by Prunella Clough and by my grandfather, Cecil Michaelis. The rug is by The Rug Company and the pendant light over the pool table is made out of recycled polystyrene and is by Paul Cocksedge."
5The sitting room
"The pool/ping pong combination table was made by Sir William Bentley based on a very simple oak framed table. The chair is by Moroso as is the sofa. The artwork is by the architect and artist Thierry Despont."
6The hall
"The curved staircase has a Corian slide against the side wall, which is very fast - hence the big cushion at the bottom. The picture is Love Saves The Day by Harlem Miller. It’s the first thing you see as you walk into the house."
7The courtyard
"The outside courtyard is effectively a swimming pool tiled with Pyrolave. The space is used pretty much every day."
8The master bedroom
"Our bedroom is at the front of the house with windows to all points of the compass and with a marble bath that was being thrown out and destroyed by a client. We rescued it and here it is."
9The exterior
"The curved exterior was inspired by Corbusien Modernism."
10The roof garden
"The landscaped roof gardens offer great views of the city."
