Architect preparing cost figures for new school - Cookeville Herald Citizen

BY JIM HERRIN

The architect designing a new school in southwest Cookeville says preliminary cost figures will be ready to present to county commissioners later this month.

Kim Chamberlin of Upland Design Group updated the school board Thursday on the proposed PreK-8 school that will be located on a 45-acre tract on Lee Seminary Road.

"I understand we're targeting Jan. 13 for a joint work session with the commission, so we'll have some cost numbers put together for that," he said, adding that he also hoped to have on a 3-D rendering of the plans available for that meeting.

He presented board members with two potential floor plans, one of which splits the elementary and middle school classroom spaces, keeping the younger students away from the older students.

"That works out to about 176,000 square feet," Chamberlin said. "The other scheme that we looked at gets us down to about 167,000 square feet, but it does put those classroom areas next to each other."

Chamberlin said the current design also calls for an auditorium capacity of about 500, or about half of the student body population.

"Me personally, I'd love to look at the auditorium being full-school capacity, just because that's a nice luxury," said board member Kim Cravens. "But obviously that increases the cost."

Board member Celeste Gammon agreed.

"I just know we enjoy using that auditorium at Prescott," she said. "It's larger and it gets well-used."

Chamberlin said he could develop cost estimates for a larger auditorium.

"It's easy to put a number to it," he said. "It doesn't do much to the stage, just the seating area."

Chamberlin also said  the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is scheduled to visit the site Friday to review potential wetland issues.

"I can't think of a better day to go look at wetlands," he said, in reference to the heavy rainfall over the past two days. "Geo Services has told us they suspect that (the Corps) won't really see anything different than what TDEC (Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation) has told us, so, hopefully, we'll know by early next week what that is."
