Can the Government consider boosting the supply of public and private housing even more - raising BTO supply to 50,000 a year for the next two years and doubling the number of new executive condominiums, as well as facilitating the development of more private housing especially on centrally located, lower-density plots of land? These questions were put forth by MP Gan Thiam Poh in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 23). To further cool the property market, he proposed differential rates of marginal buyer’s stamp duty for different types of property. Mr Gan also suggested that families with two or more children as well as couples who have registered their marriage be prioritised in their first-time ballot for HDB flats. On the manpower front, he appealed for the Progressive Wage Model to be extended to skilled tradesmen to ensure a sustainable supply of local workers. He also urged that more be done, including lifting wages, to encourage Singaporeans to take up a seafaring career.
